Energy Using Products Program

The EUP (proposal)

The proposed Energy Using Products directive (Proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on establishing a framework directive for the setting of Eco-design requirements for Energy Using Products and amending Council Directive 92/42/EEC, COM (2003) 453 final, Brussels, 01.08.2003).

The goal is to make sure that companies developing products that use energy have considered ways for minimizing product energy use. It involves the development of evaluative criteria for assessing product energy use, in general, consistent with the focus of the IIPP on product life cycle assessment. If the EUP is implemented, then product manufacturers may be required to develop an environmental assessment system on the basis of ISO 14001 and will be expected to develop an environmental management assessment plan on the same basis.
