Directive 2002/95/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment
This directive limits the use of selected hazardous substances from a series of products (IT and telecommunications equipments, electrical and electronic tools, toys, leisure and sports equipments, etc.). Under the RoHS directive, the member states must ensure that new electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market after 1 July 2006 does not contain some chemical products (lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.), with some exemptions. In some applications (fluorescent lamps for instance), the RoHS directive sets minimum permissible levels for using the selected substances.
