Water Management

From 1995, the Community began to adopt a more global approach to water management. This has led to the framework directive for a policy on water which seeks to promote sustainable use of water resources and to ensure the coherence of policy in this area.

1. Framework

Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000, establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy [Official Journal L 327, 22.12.2001], a mended by Decision No 2455/2001/EC of the European Parliament and the Council, of 20 November 2001 [Official Journal L 331, 15.12.2001]

The objective is to establish a Community framework for the protection of inland surface waters, transitional waters, coastal waters and groundwater, in order to prevent and reduce pollution, promote sustainable water use, protect the aquatic environment, improve the status of aquatic ecosystems and mitigate the effects of floods and droughts. By 2010, Member States must ensure that water pricing policies provide adequate incentives for users to use water resources efficiently and that the various economic sectors contribute to the recovery of the costs of water services including those relating to the environment and resources.
