Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 January 2003 on waste electrical & electronic equipment
Under Directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment, the member states are required to develop mandatory programs for recycling and the proper disposal of used electrical and electronic equipment, including TV sets and printers. The goal is to curb the quantities of wastes as well as to encourage all operators in the production chain to improve their environmental performance over the product life cycle. The WEEED applies to a wide range of light consumer and industrial products (most household appliances, IT and Telecommunications equipment, lighting equipment and lamps, etc.). The member states should ensure that manufacturers, distributors and third parties acting on their behalf use the best available techniques for product treatment, recovery and recycling. This will include the development of waste management systems that promote a high level of separate collection and processing for WEEE. The WEED sets specific recovery targets for different types of equipment. Manufacturers will be required to provide reuse and recycling information for each new type of electric and electronic equipment introduced in the EU market.
