Regulation (EC) No 1980/2000 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 July 2000 on a revised Community eco - label award scheme
It is a voluntary program designed to encourage businesses to produce, and buyers to demand, consumer products with reduced environmental impacts. The directive presents the eco-label symbol, a stylized flower with an ‘E’ in the center, which can be used by eligible manufacturers in their packaging and promotion materials. The EU will be developing promotional programs that will encourage consumers to buy only eco-labeled products. The directive establishes the procedures that are to be used for developing the eco-labeling criteria and for reviewing the applications of companies that would like to use the eco-label for their products. The member states are responsible for designating their national ‘competent bodies’ that are responsible for carrying out national eco-labeling responsibilities. The competent bodies, in turn, constitute the members of the European Union Eco-Labeling Board (EUEB). Moreover, they are responsible for reviewing industry applications for the eco-labeling award to ensure that the products are in compliance with EUEB criteria.
